Reporting for the purposes of the project "Upgrading national research infrastructures – HPC RIVR"

Ministry for Education, Science and Sport, as the funding body of the HPC RIVR project, requires all researchers who use the new supercomputing research infrastructure to report on their research work up to and including 2023. The evaluation of the research work is specified by an indicator, which measures the hours of research work and consequently the number of the existing employment positions (in FTE) for researchers.

This means that all research hours, used by individual researchers for working on a project or used by university professors and colleagues with individual research work, for which the aforementioned infrastructure is being used, need to be registered. This does NOT mean the actual number and scope of computing tasks on the systems HPC Maister, HPC Trdina and HPC Vega, which were all created within the HPC RIVR project. Because this data cannot be acquired directly from the systems, we ask all researchers with registered usernames on these systems to report on the scope of the work, which includes all direct and indirect research work related to HPC such as:

  • basic research work (e.g. researching a basic problem, development of mathematical models, setting up databases, etc.),
  • preparing and executing HPC tasks (pre-processing and processing),
  • analysis and synthesis of results of HPC task (post-processing),
  • subsequent research work by using the results of HPC tasks (e.g. improving models, optimisation of structures, etc.).

To better understand this, please see some examples of correct reporting from users of HPC RIVR supercomputing systems for support of research work, where the mentioned systems are used to a greater or lesser extent:

  • researcher with a 100% employment on a project/programme: reports 1700 research hours or 1 FTE,
  • researcher with a 20% employment on an individual research project or programme (e.g. university professor in the scope of a supplemental employment): reports 340 research hours or 0.2 FTE,
  • researcher with a 100% employment as university professor or colleague – research work in the form of individual research work, which encompasses half of work hours in accordance with applicable Guidelines on work evaluation: reports 850 research hours or 0.5 FTE.

All users registered on the HPC RIVR system will receive the form for acquiring data via email. If the researcher has access to multiple systems, one report will suffice. The message will also contain information on the reporting period, deadline for report submission and the recipient.

A report can be made for an entire research group or project. In this case, all names of researchers with the research shares of FTEs are entered and only the complete number of hours and FTEs is entered in the form. The head of the research group signs the report in this case. An example of such a report can be found here.
